November Progress Report - Active Elk River

Active Elk River Progress Report - November 2019

November was full of action for Active Elk River construction crews. At the multipurpose facility site, cranes placed 140 interior structural walls, steel roof trusses were placed, and stadia seating installation began in the west arena. Across the street at Lion John Weicht Park, outfield and backstop fencing was installed, blockwork began on the concessions/restroom building, and the parking lot had fresh curb, gutter, and pavement put in.

Business View Magazine Article Features Elk RIver

Elk River Featured in November Edition of Business View Magazine

The City of Elk River was selected to be featured in the November 2019 edition of Business View Magazine, as part of their “Best Practices of Cities and City Management: Focus Minnesota” series. Editors were drawn to Elk River because of our proximity to the Twin Cities, strong emphasis on enhancing our natural/outdoor amenities, as well as the efforts being made to ensure our infrastructure is on point to ease mobility through the heavily-traveled area.

Sidewalk Plowing Post-Snow Event

Post Snow Event - Sidewalk Plowing

We appreciate your patience as Public Works crews continue to clear the 25 miles of city-maintained sidewalks following the snowfall last Sunday. The City of Elk River has one sidewalk snow removal machine, which went out of service the day before Thanksgiving. After awaiting replacement parts from outside vendors, fleet mechanics are confident the sidewalk snow removal machine will be operational soon.

In the meantime, Public Works staff members have been utilizing other machines like this John Deere mower with a snow blower attachment (pictured) in an effort to get sidewalks cleared. Please keep in mind, while this machine can serve as a temporary clearing option until the other machine is fixed, it isn’t meant for sidewalk snow removal, therefore operates at a much slower pace in that role.

With all snow removal equipment functioning as it should, the city strives to have all sidewalks cleared of snow 48 hours following the completion of a Snow Event, in accordance with the National Weather Service. Residents can expect to continue to see plows out every afternoon this week in an attempt to take advantage of the warmer temperatures and scrape off any leftover snow/ice pack.

Santa in the Park 2019

Don't Miss the Holiday Fun in Downtown Elk River Tomorrow

Get into the holiday spirit by joining the free festivities in downtown Elk River tomorrow (Saturday, December 7) at Rivers Edge Commons Park.

Bring the little ones and grandparents too for fun at the petting zoo from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and a little elf told us that Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on-site as well! The Bank of Elk River will take free photos of children on Santa’s lap, and gift bags filled with goodies and coupons from downtown businesses will be available to the first 300 kids in attendance. We welcome you to join in the giving spirit of the season by bringing a new, unwrapped toy for Operation Fill a Fire Truck, the Elk River Fire Department’s annual toy drive.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m., providing a joyous and warm kick-off to the holiday season, no matter what the weather brings. There will be cookies and warm beverages for all as carolers sing holiday classics.

Special Election

Special Election for State Representative District 30A Vacancy

Governor Tim Wlaz has issued a Writ of Special Election to fill the vacant Minnesota House of Representatives District 30A seat following the recent resignation of Rep. Nick Zerwas. House District 30A represents portions of Wright and Sherburne counties.

The candidate filing period to fill the vacant seat opened on Tuesday, December 3 and runs through 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10. Prospective candidates who wish to run can file for the election through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office or the elections office in the auditor/treasurer’s department of the county in which they reside. More information on candidate filings is available here.

Given that two Republican candidates (Paul Novotny and Kathy Ziebarth) have already filed for the seat, a special primary election will be held Tuesday, January 14 to reduce the number of candidates from each party in the special election down to one. The special election itself will be held Tuesday, February 4.

The special election dates allow for the new representative to be seated when the 2020 legislative session begins on Tuesday, February 11, 2020. Visit the city's website for resources on finding your polling location and more.

Operation Fill A Fire Truck

ERFD 'Operation Fill A Fire Truck'

Elk River firefighters and their families are on a mission to ensure that children and at-risk youth in our area have at least one gift under the tree this Christmas.
Help them “fill a fire truck” with new, unwrapped gifts for children and teens. All types of donations are welcome including dolls, movies, cars, board games, sports equipment and crafts. Each year, ERFD sees the greatest need for items geared toward older youth and teens. Gift cards such as VISA, Amazon, Xbox, or gas cards make great gifts in addition to toiletries, perfume/cologne, etc.
Please note, cash or checks cannot be accepted in lieu of a donation.

Donations are being accepted through December 13 at the following locations:

  • ERFD Station #2 – 13073 Orono Pkwy (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)
  • AEGIR Brewing Company – 707 Main St. NW
  • Elk River Lutheran Church – 729 Main St. NW
  • Snap Fitness/Fuse Fitness Coaching – 19022 Freeport Ave.

Battery Disposal Sites in Sherburne County

Sherburne Co. Battery Disposal Sites

In the interest of health and safety, Elk River City Hall is no longer a battery disposal site following a decision by Sherburne County recently. Sherburne County officials have removed the blue battery drop-off bins from City Hall, as there is a risk for contamination that could potentially cause fires. Sherburne County staff members suggest using the following sites for battery disposal going forward:

Lake State Recycling
19131 Industrial Blvd NW
Elk River, MN 55330

B&E Recycling
16501 US-10
Elk River, MN 55330

Stearns County Household Hazardous Waste Facility
3601 5th St. S.
Waite Park, MN 56387

Central Appliance Recyclers
3107 SE Highway 10
St. Cloud MN 56304

If you have additional questions about changes to Sherburne County’s Battery Disposal Program, call 763.765.4457.
