Thanksgiving Closures

Thanksgiving Closures and Holiday Trash/Recycling Delays

All city offices will be closed this Thursday and Friday (November 28, 29) in observance of Thanksgiving. Trash and recycling will be delayed one day with Thursday collections picked up on Friday, November 29.

The City of Elk River has a free and easy way to ensure you never miss trash/recycling notifications like this – simply download the Recycle Coach app on your Apple or Android device, and customize it according to your specific hauler and collection zone. In just minutes, your personalized garbage and recycling calendar will be equipped to send you weekly collection reminders wherever you are, in whatever format you choose (SMS/voice/email). You’ll also be notified when holidays or inclement weather impact collection schedules. For more information visit ElkRiverMn.gov/recycling.

Wear the Badge Scholarship Fund

Wear the Badge Scholarship Fund

One year ago, the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA) launched a statewide video series called Wear the Badge, a campaign aimed at improving the recruitment and retention of police officers. Elk River Police Officer Tom Chaffin was selected as one of 15 video subjects to be a part of this project, as ERPD Chief Ron Nierenhausen felt the public would connect with Officer Chaffin’s journey through his law enforcement career.

Recently, MCPA decided to extend the video series as well as collaborate with the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Foundation to launch the Wear the Badge Scholarship program. Scholarships are available to Minnesota undergraduate students studying law enforcement and related fields, offering awards of $500 to new students and $1,000 to advanced students. Eligibility requirements, application and information on how to make a tax deductible donation to the Wear the Badge Scholarship program can be found here.

In case you missed Officer Chaffin’s Wear the Badge spotlight, it can be viewed on the Elk River Police Department’s Facebook page, or on the City of Elk River’s YouTube channel.

Running Only Weekdays 3:00-4:00 p.m. at Arena

Designated Hour for Running Only Weekdays at the Arena

When the weather outside is frightful, but you still want to get some exercise in, stop by the Elk River Arena to utilize the indoor track located above the Olympic Rink. The track is open during regular business hours, unless a ticketed event is taking place such as a high school hockey game, and it’s free and open to all! Please note, weekdays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. the track is designated for runners ONLY.
Don’t quit your exercise routine when the weather cools down, bring it inside to the Elk River Arena where eight laps equals one mile! Arena staff update this webpage weekly with track hours, as they vary depending on scheduled ticketed events. Be sure to check it out before heading over to get your walking or running on this winter!

ERMU Smart Energy Provider Designation

ERMU Recognized as a Smart Energy Provider

Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) has earned a Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association for demonstrating commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency and environmental initiatives that focus on low-cost, quality, safe, and reliable electric service.

The SEP designation recognizes public power utilities for demonstrating leading practices in energy efficiency, environmental and sustainability initiatives, and the customer experience.  Earning this designation was made possible through cooperation between ERMU and the City of Elk River, who have been sustainability partners since 1997 with the Energy City Commission.

“The SEP designation recognizes a commitment to do the right thing in a way that balances policy with the values of our community,” said Tom Sagstetter, Conservation & Key Accounts Manager for Elk River Municipal Utilities. “ERMU and the City take a lot of pride in the programs we offer that help our customers save money and reduce our collective impact on the environment. It’s an honor to be recognized as a first-rate utility when it comes to smart energy.”

This is the first year the Association has offered the SEP designation, which lasts for two years. ERMU joins more than 60 public power utilities nationwide that received the inaugural SEP designation.

Winter Parking Reminder During Snow Events

Snow Event Parking Refresher

Unlike many cities, Elk River allows residential street parking year round except during a Snow Event. A Snow Event is declared with a forecast of falling/blowing snow accumulation of 1.5+ inches, and/or freezing rain, sleet, or other winter weather patterns resulting in hazardous roadway conditions. The Snow Event terminates once weather conditions have improved.

During a declared Snow Event, overnight street and city-owned lot parking is prohibited from 2:00 to 6:00 a.m. Plow operators will dispatch police to ticket and tow, per city ordinance, all illegally parked vehicles.

Please note one additional parking restriction. The upper downtown parking lot behind Blue Egg Bakery, Daddy O's, The Occasional Fling, etc. is a NO PARKING zone during a Snow Event due to safety concerns with snowpack/ice and the inability to maneuver plow trucks around parked cars.

Dedicated overnight Snow Event parking has expanded from the original 26 spaces along the north side of the King Avenue lot to include the 23 lower lot spaces closest to the Mississippi River behind the aforementioned businesses. Please view this map outlining the restrictions and be sure to visit ElkRiverMN.gov/SnowEvent for additional information.

Santa in the Park 2019

Holiday Fun in Downtown Elk River

Hey Elk River friends! Get into the holiday spirit by joining the free festivities in downtown Elk River on Saturday, December 7 at Rivers Edge Commons Park.

Bring the little ones and grandparents too for fun at the petting zoo from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and a little elf told us that Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on-site as well! The Bank of Elk River will take free photos of children on Santa’s lap, and gift bags filled with goodies and coupons from downtown businesses will be available to the first 300 kids in attendance. We welcome you to join in the giving spirit of the season by bringing a new, unwrapped toy for Operation Fill a Fire Truck, the Elk River Fire Department’s annual toy drive.

The Tree Lighting Ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m., providing a joyous and warm kick-off to the holiday season, no matter what the weather brings. There will be cookies and warm beverages for all as carolers sing holiday classics. Do you know a little one who would like to be selected to light up the Christmas tree with Mayor John Dietz? Children ages 3 to 6 are invited to enter a coloring contest where the winner will be chosen by our City Council to be the one to flip the switch. For more details, visit ElkRiverMN.gov/Santa.

Downtown Elk River is a great place for a stroll while taking in the holiday glow, not to mention lots of options to shop, dine and sip!
