Active Elk River Legislative Update

Active Elk River Update

The Minnesota Senate approved their Omnibus Tax Bill following the Minnesota House’s passing of their tax bill last week. The Omnibus Tax Bill Conference Committee convened on Friday, May 3. The committee will work to iron out the differences in the two bills over the next week before sending it back to the respective houses for final approval. The Active Elk River local option sales tax language is identical in both bills. The legislature is scheduled to adjourn on May 20.

City Beautification Award

City Beautification Award

The aesthetic appeal of a community has a direct impact on the overall quality of life for a resident – which is why the City of Elk River strives to recognize those who go above and beyond to make their property shine. Every month from May to October, a different business will be presented with the City Beautification Award, a public acknowledgment of appreciation to business owners who’ve made an effort to clean, repair, improve, and/or enhance the overall aesthetics of their property. This could be anything from repairs to a structure, enhancements to an outdoor space, or the addition of landscaping elements to a property.

Businesses can be nominated by others, or they can nominate themselves. Simply submit a completed nomination form and at least two high-quality photos (ideally a “before” and “after”). For more information, visit the Economic Development Department’s website

Call Before You Dig

Call 811 Before You Dig

Hitting underground utilities while digging can be a mistake with deadly consequences! Here are some tips to make sure you keep yourself and your loved ones safe:
  • Before doing any digging in your yard, have your utilities located. It's easy to schedule by calling 811 or by visiting the designated Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) webpage.
  • If you see a tree leaning towards a power line or a branch on a power line, call ERMU at 763.441.2020. DO NOT try to prune the tree yourself.
Spring landscaping is a fun time to give your space a makeover - do it safely!
Spring Clean Up Day Success

Mother Nature didn’t hinder hundreds of residents from kicking their spring cleaning efforts into high gear this past weekend, to recycle and dispose of unwanted household items for free or at a discounted rate at the city’s Spring Clean Up Day event. There were 354 vehicles that stopped by the Elk River Maintenance Facility with items for disposal or recycling, and 45 vehicles utilized the document shredding service. City staff members in charge of the event estimate the following totals were dropped off for recycling during the four hour clean up:

  • 100+ appliances
  • 130 television sets
  • 150 electronics
  • 175 furniture items
  • 110 mattresses
  • 200+ tires
  • Significant amount of scrap metal (exact weight TBD)
