Active Elk River Hearing in
Senate Taxes Committee

On Wednesday, March 27, the Senate Taxes Committee received testimony on Elk River’s Local Option Sales Tax to fund recreational and outdoor amenity improvements as part of the Active Elk River plan. City Administrator Cal Portner and Mayor John Dietz testified regarding the merits of the proposed projects and community participation in the process. The bill was approved and laid over for inclusion in the final Omnibus Tax Bill. A similar hearing was approved on February 25 following testimony before the House Property and Local Tax Division. That bill has been included in the Division’s final report and will next go to the larger House Tax Committee.

Yankton St Open Post-Flooding

Flood Warning Lifted, Yankton Open

The flood warning impacting the Elk River near Yankton Street and Waco Street expired last night at 7:45 p.m. Public Works crews have reopened Yankton Street, following sweeping and debris removal. The portion of Waco Street (north of Highway 10) remains closed at this time. Forecasts indicate both the Mississippi and Elk Rivers are expected to crest over the weekend.

Flooding is the leading cause of severe weather-related deaths in the U.S. claiming nearly 100 lives each year. Most of these fatalities occur in motor vehicles when people attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. People should never underestimate the force and power of water, especially when moving. Six inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult, and it only takes 12-18 inches of flowing water to carry away a vehicle – this includes trucks and large SUVs.

City Hall Hometown Solar Grant

Elk River Selected for
Hometown Solar Grant from MMPA

The Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA) has chosen the City of Elk River to receive a Hometown Solar Grant, which will fund the implementation of a 5 kW solar installation at city hall. The purpose of the Hometown Solar Grant program is to provide our community with an educational asset to teach people how sunlight is converted into electricity and the unique characteristics of solar power. In the grant application, city and Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) staff explained why city hall was a great location for a solar installation, aligning with this program’s goals, but also broadening the sustainability goals already in place here as Minnesota’s designated Energy City.

Both the City of Elk River and ERMU are eager to utilize this solar demonstration for community awareness and education, following its installation sometime this summer. Thank you, MMPA! To learn more about Elk River’s Energy City designation, click here.
