Snow Plow Operations

Plows Out in Residential Neighborhoods During Weather Warm Up

Following the cold snap of New Year's Day - current temps are feeling like a heat wave! Elk River Public Works is taking advantage of the warming temps this weekend so you can expect to see plows coming through neighborhoods scraping packed snow/ice from residential streets. While this will leave some snow along driveway edges, it is important to remove packed snow from our roads to prevent street flooding and refreeze that can occur overnight when temps drop. We apologize for any inconvenience while we perform this necessary maintenance.

Recycle Like a Pro
2019 Trash/Recycling Schedule
The 2019 trash and recycling schedule are now available on the City of Elk River’s website. There you’ll also find information on the city's free Recycle Coach app for Android and Apple devices. In just minutes, your personalized garbage and recycling calendar will be equipped to send you weekly collection reminders wherever you are, in whatever format you choose (SMS/voice/email), customized to your specific hauler and collection zone. You’ll also be notified when holidays or inclement weather impact collection schedules. Another cool feature of Recycle Coach is the 10,000+ item directory full of household items often disposed of improperly. Simply type in the name of the item you’re curious about, the app will either tell you if it’s accepted by your hauler, or give you a list of local vendors who will be happy to take it off your hands. Elk RiverFest 2019 Sponsors Needed

City Seeking Sponsors for 2019
Elk RiverFest on Saturday, July 6

The inaugural Elk RiverFest community celebration was such a success, we’re bringing it back on July 6, 2019, and we need your help to make it bigger and better than ever! Last year, more than 5,000 people gathered in downtown Elk River for food, drinks, shopping, live music, and kids’ activities – and we’re expecting an even bigger turnout in 2019! Shout out to First National Bank of Elk River who will once again be the Signature Sponsor of Elk RiverFest, and we’ve got various other sponsorship opportunities available for businesses and community organizations looking to gain exposure, while getting involved and giving back for a great cause. Inquiries about sponsorships can be made by calling Parks and Recreation at 763.635.1150, or by emailing Karen Wingard, Farmers Market and Special Events Coordinator, at kwingard@ElkRiverMN.gov

Handke Pit Outdoor Skating Rink
Outdoor Ice Rink at Handke Pit Open
Handke Pit's outdoor ice rink is officially open for the season! Grab the kids after school, sharpen your skates and head over to "The Pit" for a day of fun, or a night of skating under the lights! The warming house at Handke Pit is open weekdays from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., and weekends from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Public Works crews will continue to sweep and water the ice sheets as much as possible during the mild temperatures expected over the next few days. Please note, the other Elk River outdoor rinks remain closed at this time. Crews hope to continue ice prep at the neighborhood rinks as weather allows. We'll let you know as soon as the additional rinks are up and running. For more information on Elk River's outdoor rinks, click here.
