Active Elk River - The Future

Voters Pass Active Elk River
Plan - What Happens Next?

On November 6, voters overwhelmingly decided to invest in city amenities that will benefit every generation. The Active Elk River plan passed with 6,830 votes of support and 3,702 opposed. Curious as to what happens next? City staff members are working with our local state representatives to draft the sales tax bill to introduce when the Legislature reconvenes on January 8, 2019. The bill will need approval in both the House and Senate Tax Committees before approval by both bodies and signed by the governor. When/if the bill is signed into law, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will notify local businesses of the change in sales tax. This legislative session is scheduled to close on May 20, 2019.

ActiveElkRiver.com will continue to be your source for news and information regarding the local option sales tax for improvements and additions to recreational and outdoor amenities in the city. As soon as new information becomes available, look to the website, as well as the city’s Facebook and Twitter for updates.

Outdoor Ice Rinks
Outdoor Ice Rinks Not Open Yet
Many residents are eager to lace up their skates and enjoy one of Elk River’s outdoor ice rinks with friends and families – but Public Works crews need people to stay off the rinks until they’ve been properly prepped and opened. Crews have been working tirelessly to get Handke Pit ready for skating, but thanks to a snowball fight on the ice over lunch, instead of simply re-flooding this afternoon, crews had to clear the ice sheet of snow and ice to avoid a bumpy and unsafe surface for skaters later on. With your cooperation, Public Works crews hope to have Handke Pit open soon and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as it happens!
As a reminder, Handke Pit’s outdoor skating rinks are open Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., and from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Afternoon openings allow for city staff members to sweep the ice surface daily and distribute several coats of water on the rinks surface before opening to the public each day

Shop with a Cop 2018

Shop With A Cop Success

Because of generous donations from The Eddy Foundation, Bernick's Pepsi, Walmart and Chris Collins, Shop with a Cop was a big success! Elk River, Big Lake and Becker Police Departments, alongside members of the Sherburne County Sheriff's Department helped 20 deserving kids shop for Christmas gifts for loved ones.

K-9 Duke from Elk River Police and Officer Heldt along with Riggs and Deputy Sturm were also able to join us! Thank you to all who volunteered their time to make this such a wonderful event!
