Hwy 169 Redefine
Preliminary Design Review for
Hwy 169 Redefine Project Underway

Last spring, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) dedicated funding through the Corridors of Commerce program that will convert Hwy 169 to a freeway, removing all five stoplights from the Mississippi River north through Elk River. Construction is currently set to begin in 2023/2024, however the groundwork for a mobility improvement project of this magnitude is already beginning. MnDOT is in the final stages of finalizing a contract with a consultant to review the preliminary design for the Hwy 169 Redefine project. Review of preliminary design options will begin in early 2019, at which time public meetings and open houses will be announced to educate residents, businesses, and commuters about the project, discuss timelines, construction impacts as well address any questions or concerns. Stay tuned for more information as we move into 2019.

Twin Lakes Road

Twin Lakes Road Roundabout
Project Open House, Dec. 5

You’re invited to an open house on Wednesday, December 5 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Twin Lakes Elementary School (10051 191st Ave. NW) to discuss the reconstruction of two intersections along Twin Lakes Road. Sherburne County recently received federal funds to improve operations and safety on Twin Lakes Road through the installation of roundabouts at Cleveland Road (CR 40) and Viking Boulevard (CR 33). At the open house, project staff will provide attendees with the current construction schedule, potential construction impacts, and address any questions or concerns.

Outdoor Skating Rinks

Outdoor Skating Rinks Coming Soon

There’s no denying winter is here, and with that being said here’s a quick overview of outdoor skating rinks in Elk River. The City of Elk River maintains five outdoor skating rinks:

  • Handke Stadium
  • Lion John Weicht Park
  • Mississippi Oaks Park
  • Riverplace Park
  • Kliever Lake Fields

Handke Stadium has a warming house which is open weekdays from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., and weekends/holidays/non-school days from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Public Works staff members focus first on Handke Stadium, typically needing about a week of ideal conditions (daytime highs of 15 degrees, nighttime lows of -5), before starting operations on the other neighborhood rinks. Staff hopes to have Handke Stadium outdoor rinks ready

to go by mid-December, followed by the other rinks by or before New Year’s.
