Active Elk River - The Plan

Traffic Counter Elk River

Traffic Counters Placed Around City

Have you noticed these black tubes across several city streets lately? They're traffic counters placed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation on state and county roadways every two years to verify that roadway's classification.

Here's how they work - vehicles run over the tube generating a small puff of air, which is then recorded by a counter (small box attached to one side of the tube), thus logging all vehicle traffic during the duration of time the tubes are present on the roadway. Fun fact, some traffic counters can even record the total time between vehicles traveling over the tube!
