Trash and Recycle Cart Placement
Keep Carts Behind Curb
Elk River's Street Maintenance crews are responsible for clearing more than 160 miles of roadways, from sweeping to snow plowing - and obstructions like trash/recycling carts, and portable basketball hoops left in the street keep operations from running as efficiently as possible.
Trash/recycling carts belong behind the curb in your driveway or yard on your scheduled collection day. Fun fact - refuse trucks are equipped with long arms to grab the carts and empty them, so correctly placing your cart(s) out of the street won’t impact collection.
Not only is it an ordinance violation to leave items in the public right-of-way, but this forces sweeper/plow operators to maneuver around the obstruction resulting in incomplete clearing, while also increasing the risk of damage to city equipment as well as the item they’re trying to avoid. Roadway obstructions also put your friends, neighbors and other motorists at risk who may happen upon an unexpected item in the roadway, resulting in an accident or injury.
Containers need to be placed curbside by 6:00 a.m. on your service day to ensure pickup. If the containers are not out by 6:00 a.m., you can contact Republic directly at 320.252.9608 to schedule a return pickup for an additional charge.
If for any reason your trash/recycling has been missed on your scheduled collection day, please contact Elk River Municipal Utilities at 763.441.2020.
Recycle Coach
Did you know the City of Elk River has a free and easy way to never miss another collection day? Download the Recycle Coach app on your Apple or Android device, and customize it according to your specific hauler and collection zone. In just minutes, your personalized garbage and recycling calendar will be equipped to send you weekly collection reminders wherever you are, in whatever format you choose (SMS/voice/email). You’ll also be notified when holidays or inclement weather impact collection schedules. Another cool feature of Recycle Coach is the 10,000+ item directory full of household items often disposed of improperly. Simply type in the name of the item you’re curious about, the app will either tell you if it’s accepted by your hauler, or give you a list of local vendors who will be happy to take it off your hands.
