Outdoor Skating Rinks

Outdoor Skating Rink Update
Handke Pit continues to be the only public outdoor rink open in Elk River. With snow/rain mix in the forecast for Thursday and Friday (January 14 and 15) please be aware Handke Pit likely won't be cleared again until Saturday, January 16.
Please remember, due to pandemic restrictions, the Handke warming house is not open, however there are additional benches and seating near the skating areas.
The other Elk River outdoor rinks remain closed because of the unseasonably warm temperatures resulting in poor ice-making conditions. However, colder temperatures are on the horizon and Public Works crews plan to have overnight staff working the week of January 18 to get the additional three rinks up and running.
Handke Pit (1133 4th Street NW) is the most popular outdoor rink in town, featuring two rinks with boards, an open skate area, and a warming house which is not open at this time. Once open, warming house hours are as follows:
- Monday-Friday 3:00-9:00 p.m.
- Weekends and holidays 1:00-9:00 p.m.
Additionally, this year the city is partnering with Spectrum to provide an additional rink with boards, a warming house, and lights at the Spectrum athletic fields (10129 181st Avenue NW).
Public Skating Rinks - No Warming Houses
The city maintains two unsupervised general skating rinks in the following neighborhood parks without warming houses:
- Mississippi Oaks Park (17998 Elgin Street)
- Riverplace Park (13818 186th Lane)
